In a celebration of artistic expression and community collaboration, West Art Lancaster unveiled a series of School District of Lancaster student murals. These artworks, adorning the walls of our community partner’s building, stand as a testament to the talent, passion, and unity within our schools and neighborhoods.
Speaking with Kaleigh Antes, a seventh-grader at Wheatland Middle School and one of the artists behind these murals, her words resonated deeply. She shared the meaning behind her artwork, a reminder that while life may be transient, the impact we leave behind is everlasting. Kaleigh’s insight encapsulates the essence of this project – a testament to the enduring power of art to convey emotions, provoke thought, and ignite change.
The collaboration between the school district and West Art speaks volumes about the strength of our community partnerships. Michael Slechta, Instructional Program Manager of Unified Arts and Humanities, eloquently articulated the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing that it is through such alliances that we are able to realize ambitious projects like this one.
The project involved students from 11 different schools, each contributing their unique perspectives and talents to the 12 panels that now grace the walls of West Art. Laura Fenig, an art teacher at Phoenix Academy, shared her pride in seeing the students’ artwork come to life. “It feels amazing, really proud of what they did. I think a lot of them achieved more than what they thought they were going to be able to do. It feels really good. They were really happy today,” she remarked.
Josh Gibbel, Co-Owner, Co-Founder of West Art, shed light on the scope and timeline of the project, emphasizing the swift yet meaningful execution. “As a sanctuary for music and art, it seemed important to have a public art component to what we’re doing with the building… Within eight weeks, from start to finish, all 12 murals were done.” The efficiency of the process, coupled with the profound impact on both students and the community, speaks volumes about the power of collective creativity.
Reflecting on the journey, Rufus Deakin expressed admiration for the students’ remarkable talent. “I was just massively impressed, particularly with the younger students, how incredible their work was,” he remarked, underscoring the exceptional quality and vibrancy of the murals.
For Matt Johnson, a parent of an SDoL graduate, the unveiling of these murals represents a celebration of culture, vibrancy, and community. As he gazes upon these works of art, he is reminded of the incredible diversity and talent that define our district. More than mere decoration, these murals embody the essence of community itself, serving as a testament to the transformative power of art in uniting us all.
As we stand in awe of these magnificent murals, we are reminded that art transcends boundaries and speaks a universal language. Through their creativity and imagination, the students of the SDoL have not only adorned the walls of West Art but have also left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who behold their work. This unveiling marks not only a celebration of art but also a celebration of community, diversity, and the enduring power of collaboration.
Together, we celebrate the power of art to inspire, unite, and transform lives. For more photos, visit us on Facebook! To learn more about West Art Lancaster, click here.
