Vanessa Grant, a Senior at McCaskey High School, has recently been honored by Senator Scott Martin for her outstanding achievement in the field of mock trial. Grant’s remarkable performance in the 2023 international Empire Mock Trial tournament has earned her recognition as one of the “most outstanding attorneys” among approximately 700 participants.
The Empire Mock Trial tournament is renowned for simulating real trial scenarios, providing students with a platform to hone their legal skills in a competitive environment. Grant’s prowess in the courtroom has not only impressed her peers and mentors but has also garnered attention from notable figures in the legal community.
Looking ahead, Grant has set her sights on a career in law, a path she is well-prepared to pursue thanks to her experiences in mock trial. Lancaster County President Judge David Ashworth expressed confidence in Grant’s future, noting that her practical skills and newfound confidence will serve her well as a trial lawyer.
Reflecting on her journey, Grant expressed gratitude for the confidence she gained through mock trial, stating, “As a freshman or a sophomore, I was just so quiet and I didn’t have that confidence. And now I just really do, and everything I do, it’s because I gained the confidence that I got from mock trial. I just really appreciate that and I know I’ll be able to use these practical skills as a trial lawyer in my future.”
Kevin Webster, Grant’s mock trial advisor, praised her growth and commitment to excellence. While Webster regrets not having another year to coach Grant, he eagerly anticipates the opportunity to witness her future success as a trial lawyer.
