VanGo! Museum On Wheels brings artistic inspiration to SDoL elementary schools

The School District of Lancaster welcomed the VanGo! Museum on Wheels to its elementary schools. This initiative, funded by a generous grant, provided students with a unique opportunity to engage with museum-quality arts and crafts right at their doorstep.

Since its inception in 1992, VanGo! has been dedicated to bringing enriching art experiences to communities with limited access to traditional museums. Steering into the heart of the community in a 34-foot custom Winnebago, VanGo! transforms the traditional museum visit into an engaging mobile exhibition. Complete with onboard galleries, group assemblies, and hands-on activities, the program ensures that students encounter the world of art right at their school’s doorstep.

Willa Adams, the Coordinator of the VanGo! initiative at the Susquehanna Art Museum, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with Lancaster’s diverse student body. “We’re thrilled to be here, thanks to the generosity of a grant covering all participating schools,” Adams remarked. “Our focus is on showcasing artists who creatively utilize upcycled materials, inspiring students to explore art beyond conventional boundaries.”

Dr. Alex Rohrer, Community School Director at Burrowes Elementary, highlighted the transformative impact of VanGo!’s immersive approach. “The accessibility of this experience is remarkable,” Dr. Rohrer emphasized. “By bringing the museum directly to our students, VanGo! ignites their passion for art and fosters a deeper connection with their creative potential.”

Mike Slechta, Instructional Program Manager of Unified Arts and Humanities, underscored the significance of exposing students to real-world artistic experiences. “For many of our students, this marks their first encounter with a museum setting,” Slechta noted. “Exploring themes like upcycling not only broadens their artistic horizons but also instills values of environmental stewardship.”

Even the youngest learners, like Pre-K, Moira Donegan, paraprofessional, reveled in the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of art. “It’s awesome that kids of all ages can explore different perspectives,” Donegan remarked enthusiastically. “Seeing art on a bus is so cool!”

The visit of VanGo! On Wheels to Lancaster elementary schools not only broadened horizons but also fostered a deeper appreciation for art and creativity among students, reinforcing the district’s commitment to holistic education.
