This Earth Day, on Monday, April 22, 2024, we’re thrilled to share a heartwarming update from Wharton Elementary School, where our community has truly taken the initiative to make a lasting difference. ‘
On April 13th, a group of dedicated volunteers, including community members, neighbors, and Wharton families, came together to plant 13 large canopy native trees on the school campus. This incredible effort was made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Wharton Wonder Garden Committee, the Lancaster City Alliance, and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay.
Thanks to a grant obtained by these wonderful partners and the diligent support from our SDOL facilities staff, this project, which began planning in the fall of 2023, beautifully came to life just in time for Earth Week 2024. The planting of these trees marks an important step in the Wharton Wonder Garden initiative, which includes 9 ambitious goals approved by the district to enhance biodiversity and expand outdoor learning opportunities for our students.
This initiative not only beautifies our campus but also serves as a living classroom for our students, teaching them invaluable lessons about nature, science, and the importance of environmental stewardship. We are so proud of everyone involved in this project and grateful for the support and enthusiasm from our community. Let’s continue to nurture our Wonder Garden and grow together.
If you’re inspired by this project, they’re always looking for more “wonder gardeners” and waterers – no previous experience necessary, just a passion for making a difference! Together, we’re planting seeds for a brighter, greener future.
