Wharton ES honors Hispanic Heritage through celebration

Between September 15 and October 15, the School District of Lancaster celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of our Hispanic families who help shape our schools and community.

At Wharton Elementary School, the month was not just observed but deeply lived through lessons, art, music, and shared experiences. Principal Demettra Welters and her staff transformed classrooms and hallways into spaces of discovery and appreciation, where students could explore what Hispanic heritage means in their community and in their daily lives.

“Each year, we study and learn about the culture of our Hispanic population, not only those who attend our school but also those who are part of our greater Lancaster community,” said Welters. “We want our students to see themselves reflected in what they learn, and for everyone to understand and appreciate the beauty and richness of the cultures that surround us.”

Throughout the month, students engaged in hands-on learning experiences designed to highlight the diversity of Hispanic and Latin American cultures. Lessons touched on geography, language, and art, while classrooms filled with traditional music, bright decorations, and cultural projects. Students learned about famous figures in history, sampled foods from different countries, and studied the meaning behind colorful garments and traditional dances.

The celebration culminated in a schoolwide assembly that brought those lessons full circle. Staff and students gathered to honor what they had learned and to share it with one another. The assembly featured a presentationa nd dance showcases that reflected both pride and curiosity. Guest speakers, representing various Hispanic backgrounds, shared personal stories about identity helping students connect the classroom learning to real-life experiences.

Adding even more excitement to the day, Santina from Embodyment Wellness Studio joined the celebration to teach students a traditional Latin dance. Her energy and encouragement inspired students to move with confidence and joy, giving them a memorable, hands-on experience with Hispanic culture through music and movement.

“Our students were incredibly engaged,” said Welters. “From learning about the history shared by one of our presenters to dancing and singing together, they were invested in every moment. It was beautiful to see them pairing and sharing what they know while also celebrating those around them.”

Adding a special touch to the event, Superintendent Dr. Keith Miles joined the celebration and addressed students in both Spanish and English. His remarks emphasized the importance of language and leadership. The call-and-response moment that followed filled the room with laughter and enthusiasm, reinforcing how connection and belonging are at the heart of every SDoL celebration.

The event was supported by the Office of Educational Access and Opportunity, led by Director Jassinya Alvarado, whose team works year-round to create inclusive learning environments that celebrate student identity and ensure equitable access for all. Their collaboration helped ensure the celebration was both educational and empowering, giving students an authentic understanding of Hispanic and Latin American traditions.

For Wharton Elementary, Hispanic Heritage Month is a reflection of who they are as a school community. By honoring the cultures represented in their classrooms, they are also nurturing empathy, respect, and connection among all students.

“Celebrations like this remind us that learning doesn’t just happen through textbooks,” said Alvarado. “It happens when students share their stories, when families feel seen, and when every child feels that they belong.”
