March 14, or 3.14, is widely recognized as Pi Day, a celebration of the mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. At Wickersham ES, however, Pi Day goes beyond math, it’s a day to bring the entire school community together through an exciting and engaging Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) initiative.
This year, Wickersham hosted its 2nd Annual Pi Eating Contest, a beloved tradition that has quickly become a highlight for students and staff alike. The contest not only honors Pi Day but also reinforces the school’s commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive school environment. Under the leadership of Principal Abby Rivera, Wickersham continues to embrace PBIS strategies that encourage positive behavior and strengthen community bonds.
A Creative Twist on Pi Day
Rather than focusing solely on the mathematical properties of pi, Wickersham’s celebration took a fun and interactive approach. This year’s competition featured a special twist: contestants dressed as characters from Inside Out 2 to promote the school’s upcoming Spring Movie Night. This theme aligned perfectly with Wickersham’s dedication to emotional regulation and well-being, reinforcing its status as a RULER Spotlight School, where students and staff learn to Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Regulate emotions.
“The Pi Eating Contest is a fantastic way for students to see their teachers and staff in a different light,” said Principal Rivera. “It’s an opportunity to build connections, foster joy, and celebrate something unique as a school community. While teachers may introduce the concept of pi in their lessons, this event is about creating a positive and engaging atmosphere for everyone.”
The Contest: A Battle of Pies and Personalities
The competition was both lighthearted and intense. Contestants brought their own pies, which were weighed before and after the contest. The winner was determined by who consumed the most pie by weight within 90 seconds. Contestants could use one utensil of their choice whether a fork, spoon, lacrosse stick, shovel, or even just one hand! With strict refereeing by Mr. Lipisko, fair play was ensured, making the stakes even higher.
Adding to the excitement, defending champion Crystal Paredes-Rodriguez made a grand entrance as ‘Sadness’ escorted by Principal Rivera, who dressed as ‘Joy’ as the crowd erupted in cheers. The energy was electric as competitors, dressed as Joy, Anxiety, Nostalgia, and other Inside Out 2 characters, took their places at the table, ready for a whirlwind of pie-eating madness.
Beyond the competition, this schoolwide event was an opportunity to celebrate community, teamwork, and school spirit. As Dean of Students Nate Miller emphasized, “This is the one event of the year where the entire school comes together just to have fun. It’s a great way to strengthen our school culture and give students a positive, shared experience.”
Building Community Through Celebration
The Pi Eating Contest is just one of many initiatives that make Wickersham Elementary a model for fostering a welcoming and engaging school environment. Events like these demonstrate the school’s commitment to PBIS by reinforcing positive behavior and strengthening the sense of community in a fun and meaningful way.
As students cheered on their teachers and staff, it became clear that this event was about more than just pie, it was about laughter, connection, and the joy of learning together. With another successful Pi Day in the books, Wickersham continues to create an exciting space for students to grow academically and emotionally.
