A Message from Mrs. Vazquez-Markley, Principal

Here we are in April with only two months left of school. April is a busy month as we prepare for the Ross Spring Fling Family Dance, the Spring Musical, and many field trips as well!
PSSA’s for 3rd-5th graders begin at the end of April. Students and teachers are working hard to ensure students are meeting their grade-level standards.
Our FTO is organizing the Family Dance for our Spring Fling scheduled for Thursday, April 9th at 6pm. Adult support is appreciated!
Field trips and other end-of-year activities are starting. It is important that all permission slips are completed and returned to classroom teachers promptly. This District requirement asks that all permission slips are received at least 2 weeks prior to the student’s field trip. Please help us respect this deadline. Our Ross Rockets will finish strong by staying focused on being responsible, respectful, and safe. Our goal is for all students to demonstrate these behaviors both in and out of school. It’s going to be a fun and busy month!
Partnering with you,
Mrs. Vazquez-Markley

Our K4 friends will start the month of April talking about Spring and the changes we see around us as the weather starts to change. In this unit, we will talk about flowers and what they need to grow and survive. After our spring unit, we will end April by talking about animals around us. These will include animals we typically have as pets, farm animals, and animals we can find locally in the forest. By the end of April, we will have completed learning all the letters of the alphabet, finishing up our last few letters of the week. We will continue to expand our knowledge of letters by starting to work on identifying the beginning sound in words. In math, we will continue to expand our counting and number recognition skills and briefly introduce what it means to add numbers together.
In ELA, K5 students are learning about the world of bugs while practicing reading and writing skills. Students are working on sounding out and blending CVC words along with building strong letter-sound knowledge. In math, we will be starting a new unit on Weight and Place Value. Students will explore weight, count by 10s and 1s, compare numbers, and solve addition and subtraction problems within 10. In science, we are finishing our weather unit. In social studies, we are continuing to learn about the past, present, and future, and how our experiences help tell our unique stories.
First graders will become botanists as they learn more about plants through their research and develop opinions about plants based on their research. They will examine solar and lunar patterns’ effects on changes in daylight and seasons in science. In social studies, students will continue to develop their understanding of their rights and responsibilities as citizens. In math, students will begin Unit 7, which focuses on 2-digit numbers: adding and subtracting and comparing them. Students will also continue to practice solving different types of story problems. Finally, students will continue to develop their emotional selves by learning more feeling words. Please continue to have your child read and log their steps. Thank you for all you do to support your child’s growth!
In April, 2nd grade will be starting new units in both English Language Arts and Bridges Math. In our final second-grade ELA unit, students will explore jobs in our community. They will research and write about a specific career, such as a firefighter, teacher, doctor, farmer, veterinarian, or police officer. As a culminating project, students will design a poster using the Canva app to showcase what they have learned. In Unit 7 of Bridges Math, students will focus on fractions and fractional parts, as well as metric measurement, including the centimeter. and meter, and two and three-digit addition and subtraction. In science, we will explore environments for living things, including plants and animals. Finally, in social studies, students will expand their knowledge of their relationship to the physical world around us. This will be a great marking period.
3rd-grade Ross Rockets are soaring into Geometry concepts in math! They are beginning to explore the ocean and will be creating detailed sea creature research projects this spring! We continue to explore living things in science, and we will be making global connections throughout our social studies unit! We are excited for all the fun activities and events coming up in April and May, starting with the Symphony trip on April 1st!! Students continue to do an awesome job with their reading steps at home and in school. As always, families, we are so grateful for your support as we navigate the last marking period of our third-grade journey together!
Fourth Graders have a lot of exciting things coming up this month. We are very excited for our field trip to the Whitaker Center to kick off the month! The students will have the opportunity to explore different areas of science through hands-on activities and to experience an interactive movie about the Great Barrier Reef. In math, we are in the middle of our geometry unit, focusing on different things like polygons, angles, and finding the area of different shapes. In ELA, we are beginning to explore different states in America. As we learn more about Pennsylvania as a class, students are working to become experts in a state of their choosing. We are very excited to see what they will create about their research topic! Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to a great marking period!
April is going to be a busy and exciting month for our 5th graders! In Math, we’re starting Unit 6 on coordinate grids and geometry. In ELA, students are exploring the Revolutionary War, practicing opinion writing, and completing TDAs. In Science, we’re finishing Energy and Matter in Ecosystems and starting Earth’s Interactions and Resources. We also have two exciting trips coming up: Valley Forge (rescheduled) and Franklin & Marshall College (F&M). With so much learning and adventure ahead, it’s going to be a fun and engaging month!

In Art class, our Ross Rockets are happy Spring has sprung and are creating Spring-inspired projects. Pre-k has been practicing drawing shapes and cutting while creating Spring crafts such as a cloud and rainbow, a butterfly and sun. Kindergarten is working on a cut-out paper sun and rainbow, while 1st grade is creating their own giraffe collage. Our 2nd graders are creating their own dancing giraffes inspired by the book “Giraffes Can’t Dance” and our 3rd graders are finishing up their optical illusions, where they are practicing shading. Our 4th graders are creating neon-painted cupcakes inspired by famous artist Wayne Thiebaud, and 5th graders are learning about famous artist NYC Laolu and creating digital artwork on their iPads inspired by his line work.
In PE, students in all grade levels are learning how to play racket sports. They will be using tennis balls and birdies in a variety of activities. The goal is to teach students how to use the rackets safely and teach them the rules of the games so they can play if given the opportunity. Most of the students will have the opportunity to play tennis this year at the Ross field day at Buchanan Park!
In Music class, K4 continues to explore music through songs about Spring. In Kindergarten we continue to read, write and play rhythms found in literature. 1st grade is taking their understanding of melodic direction to the next level by playing xylophones. 2nd through 5th grades are starting a bucket drumming unit that will create an opportunity for improvement in rhythm reading and drumming skills. After school at musical practice, the students will begin to run the show from beginning to end. We will start focusing on stage entrances, stage exits, memorizing our lines and lyrics.
Entering Absences in ParentVUE
If your student is absent, please enter their absence through ParentVUE on the day of their absence. If you don’t remember your log-in, or if you’ve not yet set up your account, you may call the office for your log-in information. ParentVUE is an important part of your students’ school records. Easy access for you to enter absences, email their teacher and update your phone number or the phone numbers of emergency contacts.
You may also send a message by email to attendanceross@sdlancaster.org
Parent excuses must be received in the office within 3 school days of the absence.
Volunteer Clearance Platform
The School District of Lancaster is using a new platform for guardian volunteers to upload clearances. Any guardian who would like to chaperone field trips, please plan ahead. Start the process now so when asked, you can say, “Yes! I’d love to chaperone the field trip!”
