A Message from Mrs. Vazquez-Markley, Principal

It is already March, and Spring will be here before we know it.
A big shout-out to our K5 through 5th grade Ross Rockets! They are preparing to take their STAR District assessments in Reading and Math. I know all students will be focused and ready to do their best!
We will begin talking about PSSA’s in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade so students are prepared for testing in April. A flyer was sent home with all 3-5th graders with the specific dates for testing and it is listed below. Please mark your calendar and avoid making appointments during testing time. Arriving at school on time is especially important during testing days.
Our FTO has been doing an amazing job of organizing fundraisers for our Ross Rockets! All proceeds go back to the students of Ross through field trips and celebrations! Thank you to all who participate! In May, our FTO will organize the Ross Spring Fling Dance! Please let me know if you are interested in helping with this fun, free family event!
The School District of Lancaster shared important information regarding the Extended Day Programs and field trips. As of the publishing of this newsletter, all field trips for Ross Elementary have been approved. That being said, if you would like to be a chaperone for your students’ field trip, start the process now to apply for your Child Clearances. The link is below.
In partnership with you,
Mrs. Vazquez-Markley

Our K4 friends start the month with “Our Beautiful World” theme. During this theme we will “travel” to different parts of the world to learn about their cultures. We will use hands-on activities to learn about famous buildings, history, and important elements to their cultures. These two weeks are so jam packed with learning that we will take a brief break from learning a letter of the week. We will end the month moving into our Nature theme. We will be talking about ponds, and bugs while learning letters, letter sounds and counting. In March we will also be taking our field trip to the Whitaker center. It will be a fun filled month with lots of learning.
In ELA, K5 students will continue learning about ecology by reading and writing about ecosystems, plants, and animals. In Math (Unit 6), we are learning about 2D (flat) and 3D (solid) shapes, building shapes, finding shapes in our world, understanding teen numbers (11–20 as “10 and some more”), and solving addition combinations within 10. In Social Studies, we are beginning a new unit about time. Students will explore how time is organized (past, present, and future), how patterns like days and seasons repeat, and how sharing our life stories helps show what makes each of us unique. In Science, we will continue our unit on weather.
First graders will be wrapping up our Family Unit in ARC and shifting our focus to plants and opinion writing as we transition into the fourth and final unit – Plants. In science, we will briefly examine how parents and offspring can be similar and different, as well as parent behaviors that help their offspring survive. We will begin a new unit in social studies focusing on the roles and responsibilities of citizens. In math, we will be revisiting adding and subtracting within 20 using models such as the number rack. Students will also grow their emotional intelligence as we add to our repertoire of emotion words this month. Thank you for your continued support at home!
In March 2nd grade is going to be lucky in learning! In ELA we are continuing our Animal Stories unit in ARC. Students are learning about fables, morals, and lessons. They will be continuing their drafting and creating their own animal story books on Canva. In math we are entering Unit 6, Geometry so shapes are at the end of our rainbows! We are going to be using shape tiles, geoboards, and models to learn about both 2D and some 3D shapes – Number Corner is 3D shapes so it’s all tied together this month! There will even be some fractions with our shapes as well. In science we are continuing to learn about changes to the earth’s surface – diving deeper into natural phenomenons like earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and floods. Social studies we are finishing up our study of innovations and going to be starting a new unit on digital citizenship!
Miss Krol’s class our students have been working on their self-management skills. We have learned about what it means to have integrity, how to manage our emotions and actions when something feels challenging, and how to manage our actions when we are feeling big emotions. We are gearing up to do another escape room to demonstrate what self-management skills we have learned. Our class is also working hard to complete our SMART goals we have set and continue to be the best learners we can be.
3rd-grade Ross Rockets are in the process of writing their own Fairy Tales, as well as strengthening their comprehension skills as they explore traditional tales, fables, and folktales. Our learners continue to develop their problem-solving and explain their thinking with peers in mathematics. Students will write multiplication and division story problems, learn about area and perimeter, and develop their number sense with fractions.
3rd graders continue to expand their knowledge of living things with science and deepen their understanding of civil rights through our Social Studies curriculum. We are so proud of the students as they strengthen their classroom communities each day with kindness and understanding. Families, we appreciate your support as students continue to do an awesome job with reading steps in school and at home!
Fourth Graders, in ELA, we are continuing to explore the American Historical Fiction genre. We are finishing up our books, and we will write a paper analyzing “Away West.” The students will show what they know in a five-paragraph essay citing evidence from the story. In math, we are continuing to work on addition and subtraction of greater numbers. We will also be exploring some of the hottest, coldest, highest, and deepest places in the world. We are using those records to help us better understand measurements. In science, we are exploring energy transfers that we see on a daily basis. We appreciate your support, and we encourage our students to continue to practice their multiplication facts and get their reading steps.
March is shaping up to be a busy and exciting month in 5th Grade! In Science, we are continuing our study of Energy and Matter. We are beginning Unit 5 in math, which focuses on multiplying and dividing fractions. In Social Studies, we are learning about Colonialism and examining its impact on Europeans, Indigenous Americans, and African Americans. And in ELA, we are in the middle of our Adventure genre unit while continuing to strengthen our Text-Dependent Analysis (TDA) writing skills. It’s going to be a full month of meaningful learning!

In Art class, K4 & K5 students are creating owl collages while working on shapes and cutting skills. First graders are creating paper winter snowglobes, focusing on overlapping and cutting. Second graders are creating snowmen, looking up while learning about perspective. Third graders will be learning about artist Jen Aranyi in creating a winter landscape watercolor painting inspired by her. Fourth graders are learning about optical illusions and are practicing their shading skills. Finally, fifth graders are creating a pop art-inspired candy drawing while talking about composition.
In PE, students are working on jump-rope activities. Here, students will work on basic jump rope turns with a regular rope. They will also participate in small group activities like “Jake the snake” where students have to jump over a continuously turning rope. At the end of the unit, students will work on using a long jump rope where partners turn the rope while a student jumps in the middle.
In Music this month, we will explore music through literature. We will embellish stories with songs, dances, and sound effects. Our creativity will help us become problem solvers and practice our teamwork skills. 3rd – 5th grades will continue to work on our spring musical, Beauty and the Beast Jr. Mark your calendars for May 14th and 15th at 7:00. It will be amazing to see!
