A Message from Mrs. Vazquez-Markley, Principal
Wow! I can hardly believe it’s October! September was a month full of great activities and rigorous learning at Ross Elementary!
Each week, during morning announcements, we highlight a Skill of the Week and share ways students can work on the skill. Teachers then choose the student in their class who has been working hard at the skill as their Student of Week! The student receives a certificate, a new book and pencil and then on Monday, enjoys a pizza lunch with me at Sluggers Pizzeria! We are grateful for the support of Sluggers in maintaining this great activity for our students!
Please check the SDoL calendar and watch for flyers for our Ross FTO meetings! This year we will be holding the meetings at different times and days of the week to help open the opportunity for involvement for all families. This month the meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 8 at 6pm. I hope to see you there!

K5- What a wonderful start to the school year! As September wraps up, we’re so proud of how quickly our K5 students are settling in, making new friends, learning about our school community, and exploring new routines. We’ve had a fun month filled with stories by various authors/illustrators, name building practice, letter learning, counting games & activities, and learning through play! Thank you for your continued support. We’re excited for all the fall adventures to come in October!
First graders will be continuing our work as cartographers as we learn about maps and apply them to create maps of the different communities we are part of. This work continues into social studies as we investigate what makes our location so special (seals, symbols, and landmarks). In science we learn about sound energy. Math will focus on learning to add and subtract within 20 using dominoes and double flap cards. We will apply strategies such as counting on, counting all, and doubles to help us build number sense and fluency. Thank you for your continued support at home!
2nd Gr- As September comes to a close and we get ready to jump into October, second graders are really becoming a class community. We are going to be continuing our work with measuring and place value in math. We will also be wrapping up unit 1 in ARC this week and getting ready for unit 2 where we will do a bug research project! In science we are learning about matter, specifically getting into freezing and heating substances which is fun (but a little messy!). Social studies will continue with needs and wants as well as learning life skills each Monday! In SEL we are going to continue to share, build, grow, and express ourselves respectfully in 2nd grade. Thank you so much for your support at home for your student’s learning in school!
As October starts, 3rd grade Ross Rockets are continuing to write their fantasy adventure stories inspired by The Magic Tree House books we have read in class! We continue to learn about different cultures in Social Studies and we are continuously strengthening our 3rd grade classroom communities through our SEL platforms. Our young engineers and scientists are learning about and exploring forces of motion! We are also beginning our second unit in math that involves the application of multiplication strategies while strengthening number sense and problem solving! Thank-you so much families for your support as our third graders continue to do so well with their reading steps at home! We appreciate you very much!
4th Gr- As October begins, we are moving into many new subjects. In math, we are going to begin our second unit. This unit will focus on multiplying bigger numbers. We encourage our students to practice their multiplication facts at home – this will make learning this skill easier! In ELA, we are finishing up our story, Alvin Ho. We will be moving into our new unit, Animal Adaptations. Students will work towards becoming experts on an animal of their choice. Then, they will create their own project to present all the new information they have learned. In science, we are continuing to explore what it means to be an engineer, and how they help us design new and better technology. We encourage our students to continue to get their reading steps in at home, and appreciate your support!
5th Gr- We’re looking forward to an exciting month ahead! In Math, students will begin Unit 2, focusing on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. In ELA, after finishing My Teacher is an Alien, we’ll turn our attention to writing narratives. In Science, students will continue exploring engineering and technology. In Social Studies, we’ll learn about Indigenous Americans and build financial literacy skills using the BizTown Curriculum as we prepare for our BizTown trip at the end of the month.

Art Class at Ross: Our younger art students are learning about color theory! Pre-K is experimenting with color mixing with paint to create the colors of the rainbow. Kindergarten is learning how to make the color green and they’re creating their own caterpillar based on the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. The rest of our Ross Rockets are learning about and creating artwork inspired by Hispanic Heritage Month. 1st graders are creating their own paper guitars while learning about symmetry, line, and color. 2nd graders are creating Papel picado, which is a cut paper design learning about collage and shape. 3rd graders are creating cut paper Mola’s, inspired by artwork from Panama. 4th grade is creating symmetrical mirrors while learning about symmetry, line, and pattern. Lastly, 5th graders are learning origami while creating radially symmetrical paper sculptures!
Music– Pre-K and Kindergarten are learning that music has a steady beat. We practice the steady beat through movement and by playing the steady beat on rhythm sticks. 1st and 2nd grades are starting to explore melodic direction. We are showing melodic direction through movement and playing xylophones. 3rd grade is starting recorders. We are focusing on making beautiful music with our voices and our recorders. 4th and 5th graders are playing ukuleles. They have mastered the C chord and are working on learning the F chord. All students have been working on their Winter Concert selections. Please mark your calendars for December 10, 2025. Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st graders will take the stage at 5:00, followed by 2nd and 3rd graders at 5:30 and 4th and 5th graders, band and orchestra will perform at 6:00.
In PE students in grades K-2 have been learning about the skills of rolling, tossing, throwing & catching. Students participated in a variety of throwing and catching activities, and at the end of the unit they had 2 days of station activities! In grades 3-5 we have been working on our football unit. Here we are working on basic throwing and catching skills in a number of different activities. Students at the end of the unit had the opportunity to run and dodge their classmates while playing the touchdown run!

New Volunteer Clearance Platform
The School District of Lancaster is using a new platform for guardian volunteers to upload clearances. Any guardian who would like to chaperone field trips, please plan ahead. Start the process now so when asked, you can say, “Yes! I’d love to chaperone the field trip!”
