Introduction to Agricultural and Environmental Science

This course introduces students to the broad science, production, and processing of food, fiber, and natural resources. Students in this course will apply scientific concepts learned across the secondary science curriculum in agricultural and environmental contexts. This course provides students with an overview of topics spanning the Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources pathway and prepares students for more in-depth study in the future Agricultural and Environmental Science (AES) CTE program.

Specific units of study within this course include an Introduction to AES, Agricultural and Environmental Careers, Importance of Food, Animal Science, Plant Science and Production, Agricultural Mechanics, Environmental and Natural Resources, and AES in an Urban Setting. Students engage in learning experiences in both classroom and laboratory settings, including a Greenhouse and Agricultural Mechanics lab. This course promotes an understanding of agricultural and environmental sciences at both a local and global scale and builds a critical awareness of the potential for sustainable and high-quality solutions to food insecurity and poverty in our local community.
