On the McCaskey musical situation

For the past several years, our school district has had a focus on equity, overcoming bias, and diversity. We have challenged ourselves to view situations through the “lens of equity” and do the hard work to be a more culturally responsive learning institution.

This important goal informed my decision to cancel Hairspray! as McCaskey’s spring musical.

I recognize that, ultimately, the story of the musical is one of inclusion and unity. And I absolutely believe our directors had no intention of disrespecting our students in the selection of the show. However, in reviewing the script, I found multiple instances of language that has inappropriate references to race, body weight, children with special needs, and sexism.

Yes, lines in a show can be can be changed. But clearly some students did not feel comfortable with the portrayals in the show, including the “white savior” narrative. That is why they shared their concerns with the administration. We have a responsibility to hear them and consider their perspectives.

I also believe context matters. Our country has gone through some horrific events, including the murder of George Floyd. I know many of our students participated in the social justice marches this summer. We know mental health issues of adolescents have grown and intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. The language and portrayals in the show risked further discomfort—and potentially trauma—for students facing the harsh reality of racism in our country. In addition, many families bring their younger children to see our musical.

In light of this current environment, the calls for social justice, and the written concerns of the students, I believe this is the best decision at this time.

I understand that some are disappointed. I have encouraged the music department to come up with an alternative to this production. If they are able to do so, I am confident they will provide students with a positive experience.

Finally, as a learning organization, I hope we will all—each of us—grow from this experience. We must always listen to the voices of individuals who feel marginalized or oppressed. And we should continue to have difficult conversations about art, history, and culture in age-appropriate ways. All of us will be better for it.

Examples of language from the original Hairspray! script:

  • It ain’t right dancing to that colored music.
  • Nice white kids to like to lead the way
  • Steer kids in the white direction
  • Hair was brown and nappy
  • Call my shysters, lipshitz, and strauss (references to Jewish lawyers)
  • Black is everywhere you go….. now I’ve tasted chocolate and I’m never going back
  • Want to take a shower for extra credit (said by a coach to a group of girls)
  • Thin is in and we are white as wool
  • Refer to a student with special education needs as “retarded”
  • She’s got “cooties” if I were her I’d be depressed
  • Tracy smells for being fat
  • If sighted citizens are asked to call police, or phone service is not available, simply shoot to kill
