Community Schools in Lancaster

A Community School is a partnership between school staff, families, youth, and the community to raise student achievement by ensuring that children are physically, emotionally, and socially prepared to learn. At the School District of Lancaster, we have 5 schools that serve as centers of the neighborhood by providing access to critical programs and services like health care, mentoring, expanded learning programs, adult education and other services that support the whole child, engage families, and strengthen the community. In the SDOL Community School approach, each school is paired with a lead community based organization partner that works collaboratively with the principal and the school leadership to carry out the work at the school.

Community School Directors

The Community School Director is a strategic thought partner, working closely with the principal to align academic, social-emotional, health, and other resources that support students and families. The Community School Director leverages partnerships with families, community and faith-based organizations, local government, institutes of higher learning, nonprofits, corporate groups, volunteers, etc. effectively navigating and connecting multiple systems to achieve success for kids and families. Every day, looks a little different; helping students get new uniforms or hygiene products, meeting with a new organization that wants to partner, connecting with a local church, going on a home visit to meet with a family, planning with building leadership to address needs for students, picking up a donation from a local company… Community School Directors bridge the gap for many of our schools, connecting critical resources in the community and bringing them within the walls of the school and bringing what happens during the school day out into the community.
