At the urging of student council, Buchanan Elementary School organized a virtual Black History Month conference for students, families and staff on Feb. 10.
The event features presenters including local musicians, artists, police officers and community leaders on topics including Black classical musicians, building relationships with law enforcement, local African American History and discussing race with children.
“As we focus on inclusion, equity, and excellence, the team at Buchanan is committed to prioritizing equitable opportunities and inclusive experiences for our students, staff, and families,” said Buchanan principal Justin Reese.
In 2019, Buchanan formed a Student Council to create leadership opportunities for young leaders and give voice to fourth and fifth grade students. The students challenged school leaders to be more inclusive in holiday and cultural celebrations.
“Out of this came the First Annual Buchanan Elementary Community Conference,” Reese said. “We are excited to partner with community stakeholders and believe this event we will empower students, families, and staff.”
