Buehrle-Roo celebrates a year of growth and second chances

At Buehrle Academy, the end of the school year carries a special kind of meaning. It’s a time to look back at where students started, how far they have come and the work it took to get there. For many students, the school year was filled with moments of growth that cannot always be measured on a test or captured in a grade. It was measured in better choices, stronger relationships, new skills, restored confidence and the daily effort of showing up again.

That growth was at the heart of this year’s Buehrle-Roo, Buehrle Academy’s annual end-of-year celebration.

Held during the final week of school, Buehrle-Roo brought students, staff and familiar faces from across the district together for a day of community. The weather matched the mood, with comfortable temperatures and high energy carrying through the day as students moved from one activity to the next.

Students enjoyed interactive inflatables, music, games, face painting and 1:1 competitions. Penny’s Ice Cream Truck and Rye Guy’s Food Truck helped keep everyone fed, while local vendors added to the celebration. The dunk tank was the highlight of the day, where students had the chance to “Dunk the Director” and send Director/Principal Joel Bacharach into the water.

For Buehrle Academy, the day was a tradition that reflects the heart of the school community.

“Buehrle-Roo gives us a chance to celebrate the growth, hard work and resilience our students and staff have shown throughout the year,” Bacharach said. “Our students come to us from different schools, backgrounds and experiences, but days like this remind us that Buehrle is a family. We are proud of what they have accomplished, and we are grateful for the community that helps them feel supported.”

That sense of family is part of what makes the celebration so meaningful. Throughout the year, Buehrle students and staff work together to build trust and strengthen behavior skills and create a learning environment rooted in accountability and care. The progress happens in small moments, in difficult conversations, in second chances, and in the support of adults who believe students can grow.

Buehrle-Roo gave everyone a chance to pause and recognize that work. The celebration ended with one of the day’s most anticipated traditions: the staff vs. student basketball game. Students brought energy and plenty of competitive spirit, but staff showed off their own skills and came away with the win. Still, the final score was only a small part of the story. The real victory was in the smiles and shared memories.

As the school year came to a close, Buehrle-Roo served as one last reminder of what the Buehrle community has built together. Students and staff from different schools, neighborhoods and experiences came together this year to form a learning community built on growth and belonging.

At Buehrle Academy, success is not defined by one moment. It’s found in progress, relationships and the courage to keep moving forward.
