Celebrating Our School Resource Officers: Partners in Safety, Mentorship, and Community

On Saturday, February 15, the School District of Lancaster celebrates National School Resource Officer (SRO) Appreciation Day. This day is an opportunity to reflect on the vital role our SROs play in ensuring our schools remain safe, supportive, and welcoming spaces where students can learn and thrive.

Building Relationships, Ensuring Safety
Chris Krokos, SDoL’s Coordinator of School Safety, emphasizes the role of SROs beyond their presence in maintaining security. “The most important thing they do is build relationships with our students. We aim to connect with students at an early age so that if they encounter an officer in the community, there is already a foundation of trust. Familiarity fosters comfort, and comfort creates opportunities for meaningful interactions.”

Each of our SROs undergoes training through the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO), ensuring they have the skills necessary to engage with students not only as law enforcement officers but also as trusted mentors and positive role models. They work to de-escalate conflicts, provide guidance, and foster an environment where students feel protected and heard.

A Triad of Support: Safety, Mentorship, and Counseling
Sgt. Joel Thomas, the Crime Prevention Sergeant for the Lancaster City Police Department, highlights the expansive role of SROs in our schools. “The SRO program was originally established with safety as its primary focus, but it has grown to encompass so much more. The triad model consists of safety and security, mentorship, and counseling. While some may assume their presence is solely about discipline, in reality, the majority of their time is spent forming positive connections with students, guiding them through challenges, and being a source of encouragement.”

For over two decades, SDoL and the Lancaster City Police Department have collaborated to ensure that SROs are more than just officers stationed in schools. They are individuals who genuinely care about the students they serve. “We are here to help,” Thomas affirms. “We want students and families to know that they can approach us anytime. We want to build connections so that when a moment of crisis arises, they feel comfortable reaching out.”

Additionally, Thomas highlights opportunities for students interested in law enforcement, such as the department’s Cadet Program, which offers hands-on experience to those considering a future in policing. “We want young people from our own community to see law enforcement as a viable and meaningful career path,” he says. “Some of our officers and cadets today were once students at McCaskey, and we’re always looking to welcome more.”

A Trusted Presence in Our Schools
Chris Lopez, SDoL’s Assistant Superintendent, highlights the essential partnership between the district and its SROs. “They have become an integral part of our schools. While they bring a background in law enforcement, their role within our buildings is primarily about leadership, mentorship, and resourcefulness. They are not here to discipline—they are here to support.”

Lopez, who studied criminal justice and whose father was a detective, understands firsthand the significance of their work. “I deeply respect the role they play each day. Law enforcement professionals sometimes face skepticism, but this group of individuals has fully embraced their role as a resource for students, families, and staff. Their dedication is evident in the relationships they’ve built and the positive school culture they help foster.”

A Grateful Community
As we recognize National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, we extend our gratitude to the dedicated SROs who serve our district. Throughout the month of February, SDoL will continue to highlight the meaningful contributions of each officer, showcasing the bonds they have built and the positive influence they have within our schools.

We encourage students, staff, and families to take a moment to express appreciation to an SRO for their efforts. Their service extends beyond their badge. They are mentors, role models, and valued members of the SDoL community. To learn more about each of our SROs visit our website or our social media and read all about them!

Thank you to our School Resource Officers for the work you do each day to make our schools safer, stronger, and more connected.
