Flag Football brings middle schools together for one championship run

On any given day, our students are learning in classrooms and discovering what they are capable of. But sometimes, that growth takes shape somewhere else entirely. It shows up on a field where teamwork and trust are tested in real time.

Representing Jackson, Wheatland, Reynolds, Martin, and Lincoln, these School District of Lancaster middle school students formed a team that reflected something bigger than any single school. They called themselves I.C.E, short for Integrity, Commitment, and Empowerment. Those words became the standard they held themselves to long before the first game even began.

Competing in a regional NFL FLAG tournament in Baltimore, they entered an environment that demanded more than athletic ability. With each matchup, something began to take shape.

What started as a group of individual players became a team that understood how to move together. They found rhythm in the pace of the game and confidence in one another. They learned how to respond under pressure and rely on each other in the moments that mattered most. By the end of the weekend, they had gone undefeated, earning the championship.

Now, they are heading to Indiana this July to compete in the NFL FLAG National Tournament. Their game will be streamed on ESPN.

This team began with Lancaster Rec, where students were first introduced to flag football in a way that emphasized access, inclusion, and growth. Under the direction of Reggie Marbra and the leadership of Coach Robert Larue and Coach Carlos Martinez, that foundation became the culture they built centered on accountability and showing up for one another.

NFL FLAG creates that kind of space. As the largest youth flag football league in the country, it focuses on fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship while opening the door for students of all backgrounds and abilities to participate. For our students, it became a platform for growth and connection.

That growth is exactly what we strive for as a district. We work to create environments where students feel supported, challenged, and empowered to take ownership of their journey, whether that happens in a classroom, a program, or on a field.

In July, this team will take that growth with them to the national stage. They will represent their team, their schools, and the entire School District of Lancaster. Their story will reach far beyond the field, but what they have built will stay with them long after the final game.

They learned that when you commit to something together, you can create something none of you could have done alone. Five schools came together as one team. And in the process, they built something that cannot be measured by a scoreboard.
