Fulton Theatre’s Dear Evan Hansen cast join McCaskey HS students for conversations on mental health and belonging

Actors from the Fulton Theatre cast of Dear Evan Hansen joined professionals from Ponessa Behavioral Health and Mental Health America of Lancaster County at McCaskey High School on May 8 for a conversation that gave students space to talk honestly about mental health, connection, and what it means to feel seen.

Music and theatre students in grades 9 through 12 gathered for a discussion centered around themes explored in Dear Evan Hansen, that many young people experience but don’t always openly discuss.

The discussion centered around themes explored throughout the musical including social isolation, depression, anxiety, loneliness, and suicide awareness. Students were encouraged to ask questions, share thoughts, and reflect on how those struggles can affect people both inside and outside of school.

Instead of simply watching a performance from a distance, students were able to engage directly with cast members and mental health professionals in a setting that encouraged openness and reflection.

One of the most meaningful moments of the afternoon came when McCaskey choir students joined the cast in performing “You Will Be Found.” Hearing students and performers sing the song together inside the auditorium gave the lyrics a different kind of weight. It became less about a musical number and more about reminding students that support exists, even during difficult moments.

The event was hosted by Will Broaddus, McCaskey’s Director of Choral Activities and a Trustee of the Fulton Theatre. It marked the first in a series of Fulton Theatre school visits focused on bringing conversations about mental health, wellness, and the arts directly into schools.

The initiative was made possible through support from Ponessa Behavioral Health as Production Sponsor and The Steinman Foundation as Community Engagement Sponsor, alongside community partners Compass Mark, Mental Health America of Lancaster County, and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.

For many students, the afternoon was a reminder that conversations around mental health don’t have to happen in silence and that sometimes music, storytelling, and community can help people feel a little less alone. For more photos, visit us on social media.
