Lessons beyond the classroom: Peace in the Streets block party

Students learn lessons every day that cannot be found in a textbook. They learn by watching the adults around them. They learn from the examples set by neighbors and families. They learn what it means to care for a community by seeing that care put into action.

On Saturday, June 13, Lancaster’s Peace in the Streets Block Party provided one of those lessons. Held at Culliton Park and hosted by SoWe, The Endall Movement, and CJ’s Hoop for Hope, the event brought together residents, organizations, businesses and local leaders for an afternoon dedicated to community engagement and violence prevention.

The event also honored the memory of Kendell Cook, whose legacy continues to inspire efforts to address the impact of gun violence and promote safer communities.

For young people, this event offered students a chance to see adults working together to address challenges facing the community they call home.

At the School District of Lancaster, we know student success depends on more than what happens during the school day. Our students are shaped by their classrooms, but they are also shaped by their neighborhoods, their families, and the examples of leadership they see around them.

Strong schools are supported by strong communities. When students see people investing their time, energy and resources into making Lancaster a safer, more welcoming place, they witness service, civic responsibility and shared accountability in action.

Those lessons matter. The work of creating safe neighborhoods belongs to all of us. Peace in the Streets reminds us that progress is possible when individuals and organizations come together with a shared commitment to the well-being of young people and future generations.
