Martin School artists help bring Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City to life

Martin School’s 4th grade Art Club has added its own mark to one of Lancaster’s most beloved public art traditions.

This spring, students finished designing and painting a piano for Music For Everyone’s 2026 Keys for the City, bringing their creativity from the classroom into the heart of Lancaster. The finished piano will be displayed outside of Lancaster Arts Hotel, where community members will be able to see it, play it, and experience the work of Martin students throughout the season.

Keys for the City returns this year as Music For Everyone celebrates 17 years of placing street pianos throughout Lancaster. The program has helped define Lancaster as the Street Piano Capital of the World, turning sidewalks, parks, and public spaces into places where art and music are accessible to everyone.

For Martin students, the project gave them a chance to be part of something larger than their school building. Through color, design, teamwork, and imagination, 4th grade artists helped create a piece of public art that will become part of Lancaster’s summer soundtrack.

The project reflects what makes arts education so meaningful. Students were able to express themselves creatively, collaborate with classmates, and see their work become part of the city around them. It also connects directly to SDoL’s mission to celebrate and empower every learner by helping students discover their strengths, build confidence, and find a sense of belonging.

The piano will be unveiled as part of Music For Everyone’s Keys for the City kickoff on Friday, May 15, 2026. Community members are invited to Binn’s Park from 5 to 8 p.m. for the Sound of Summer celebration, which officially launches both Keys for the City and the first Music Friday concert of the season.

The evening will include a Community Drum Circle, performances from the Community Chorus, MFE Sound Factory Strings, MFE Sound Factory Band, Ukulele Uprising, and live music throughout downtown Lancaster.

We are proud of Martin School’s young artists for sharing their talent with the city and helping remind us what happens when students are given the space to create. This piano is a celebration of student voice, community partnership, and the power of music to bring people together.
