The McCaskey computer club is forming a bond with residents of Conestoga View Nursing over something they may not have in common–technology.
The club visits with residents and helps them with computer-related questions such as how to start an email account, online shopping and using search engines. The Cyber Senior program was started last year to provide a volunteer opportunity for students. The students not only share their love of technology to a generation that might not have any computer skills, they create connections with nursing home residents and learn from an older generation.
“As the advisor of the club, I love seeing how relationships develop by each generation sharing together and it is all happening through technology,” says McCaskey Computer Science Teacher Bryan Hower. “A win-win for both sides and especially for me as an educator to be able to witness.”
The Cyber Senior program is hoping to expand to other nursing homes and is also talking with the Department of Aging on ways they can connect with others through technology.
