McCaskey Mathematics Teacher named PA State winner of the Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award

The School District of Lancaster is proud to recognize Michael E. Mitchell, mathematics teacher at J.P. McCaskey High School, for being named the Pennsylvania state winner of the Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award for grades 9–12.

This honor places Mr. Mitchell among a select group of educators across the Commonwealth who are not only advancing academic learning, but also shaping how students understand their role in the world around them.

Presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Pennsvylania, the Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award recognizes educators who bring learning to life in ways that extend beyond the classroom. Recipients are known for fostering civic responsibility, connecting students to history and community, and helping young people develop the skills and awareness needed to participate meaningfully in society.

At McCaskey High School, Mr. Mitchell does exactly that. In his classroom, mathematics becomes more than numbers on a page. It becomes a space where students are pushed to think critically, explain their reasoning, and stay with a problem even when the answer isn’t immediate. He creates an environment where effort matters, and where students begin to see themselves as capable problem-solvers.

He meets students where they are and moves them forward with purpose. Expectations are high, but support is always present. Over time, students begin to see themselves differently, not just as learners, but as individuals who can take on complex challenges with confidence.

Dr. Justin Reese, principal of McCaskey High School, highlighted the impact Mr. Mitchell has on the school community.

“Mr. Mitchell has a way of making students believe in themselves, even when they are not sure they can succeed. He creates a classroom where students are expected to think and are supported while they do it. He doesn’t lower the bar. He helps students rise to it. You can see the difference in how they approach challenges and how they talk through their thinking. That kind of growth stays with them, and it’s why this recognition is so well deserved.”

Mr. Mitchell’s work reflects the broader mission of the School District of Lancaster. Our goal isn’t only to teach content, but to prepare students to think critically and engage with the world around them. His classroom is a strong example of what that looks like in practice.

As part of this recognition, Mr. Mitchell will be honored at the 107th Annual VFW State Convention in Pittsburgh on  June 18.

We extend our congratulations to Mr. Mitchell on this outstanding accomplishment! His leadership and belief in his students continue to make a meaningful difference at McCaskey High School and across the School District of Lancaster. When students are challenged and supported, they do more than learn. They grow into who they are capable of becoming.
