SDoL announces new opening date for renovated high school stadium

The School District has announced a revised opening date for its newly renovated high school stadium, allowing additional time to complete final project milestones and ensure the facility is fully ready for students, families, and community members.

Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine Stadium at the Barney Ewell Sports Complex has undergone extensive renovations and features a new synthetic turf field, renovated grandstands and restrooms, upgraded lighting, two new press boxes, a new video board, and improvements to the school’s weight room.

Because occupancy of the facility is currently scheduled for September 18, the same day as the originally planned home football opener, district leaders elected to move the official opening of the stadium to Friday, October 2. McCaskey’s varsity football game against Red Lion on September 18 will now be an away contest.

As a result, Homecoming and related activities will move from October 2 to October 16.

“These improvements represent a significant investment in our students and community,” said McCaskey principal Dr. Justin Reese. “We want opening night to showcase the facility at its very best. Making this decision now provides certainty for our students, families, staff, alumni, and fans while helping us avoid the possibility of last-minute changes.”

District officials emphasized that construction continues to progress and that the decision is intended to provide a buffer for final inspections, occupancy approval, and project completion activities.

“We know there is tremendous excitement surrounding the new stadium,” said athletic director Teasia Pena. “By adjusting the schedule now, we can focus on creating a memorable opening experience and celebrating everything this project will provide for current and future students.”
Additional information regarding athletic schedules, Homecoming events, and stadium-opening activities will be shared as details are finalized.

The district looks forward to welcoming students, families, alumni, and community members to the renovated facility this fall.
