Belonging isn’t something students should have to search for. It should be something they recognize in their schools and in the community that shows up for them.
That belief guided the School District of Lancaster’s participation in the 18th Annual Lancaster Pride Festival, held Saturday, June 20, at Penn Medicine Park.
Throughout the day, SDoL staff joined community members, local organizations and families in celebration of Lancaster’s LGBTQ+ community. For the district, being present at Pride was about making visible a commitment we carry into our schools every day.
Pride isn’t separate from our work as a school district. It’s connected to the promise we make to every student who enters our buildings. Our mission is to celebrate and empower every learner while fostering a welcoming community where students can discover their strengths, build confidence and find a sense of belonging.
Our students deserve to know they’re valued exactly as they are. They deserve schools where they can learn without having to hide parts of themselves. They deserve adults who understand that safety and belonging are part of what makes learning possible.
Lancaster Pride offered a powerful reminder of what community can look like when people come together with purpose. Around the stadium, people gathered to celebrate identity, visibility and connection. For many young people, especially LGBTQ+ students, that visibility matters. It can help them imagine a future where they’re not only accepted, but supported.
Our strategic plan names Culture of Belonging and Family & Community Engagement as core priorities. Those words have to become visible through action. They have to shape how we teach, how we communicate, how we support students and how we show up in the community.
As a district, SDoL serves students and families from many backgrounds and lived experiences. That diversity is one of Lancaster’s greatest strengths. It also comes with a responsibility to create school communities where every student feels seen and able to thrive.
Pride gives us another opportunity to say clearly that LGBTQ+ students, staff and families belong in the School District of Lancaster. We’re grateful to Lancaster Pride for creating a space where so many people could gather in celebration and support. We’re also grateful to the SDoL staff who represented the district with joy and pride.
When students see their school district showing up in spaces that affirm who they are, it sends a message. You belong here. Your future is worth protecting. That message doesn’t end when Pride Month ends. It’s something we practice. For more photos, visit us on Facebook.
