A week of learning, rehearsing and building confidence came together as School District of Lancaster students took the stage during the Fulton Theatre Academy’s summer camp showcase, performing Shakespeare and “Tonight” from West Side Story.
The Academy’s weeklong summer camp, From Balcony to Fire Escape: Romeo & Juliet vs. West Side Story, invited high school students to explore how Shakespeare’s tragedy inspired one of Broadway’s most celebrated musicals. Through acting, singing, discussion and movement, students examined themes of love, conflict and identity while strengthening their performance skills.

Throughout the week, campers studied scenes and music from both works and considered why a story written more than 400 years ago still connects with audiences today. They also attended the Fulton Theatre’s professional production of West Side Story, giving students the chance to see the musical they had been studying brought to life on stage.
Family members and supporters gathered for the final showcase, where students shared Shakesphere selections from their week together. The program ended with a performance of “Tonight” from West Side Story.
The experience gave SDoL students another way to stay connected to the arts during the summer, try something new and share their work with an audience. Click here to learn more about the Fulton Theatre.
