McCaskey’s track and field athletes have given Lancaster plenty to celebrate, and a recent visit from Senator Scott Martin brought recognition for their accomplishments back to the school where much of the work began.
Senator Martin joined the team to congratulate its success, including Vivian Salerno’s 800-meter victory at the AAU Junior Olympic National Championships and Coach Derek Jennings’ recognition as Pennsylvania Coach of the Year. The visit gave students and their coach a chance to celebrate achievements that have brought attention to McCaskey well beyond their home track.
For Salerno, a national championship represents an extraordinary accomplishment in a race that demands both speed and endurance. Getting to that level takes sustained preparation and the ability to trust it when the race begins. Her success gives fellow McCaskey students a powerful example of how far their abilities can take them.
Jennings’ helped lead McCaskey to its first PIAA Class 3A girls team championship since 1993, adding a historic team achievement to a season of individual success. Behind those results is the ongoing work of coaching students as they develop their skills and learn how to compete with confidence.
School athletics give students a place to discover what they’re capable of while contributing to something they share with their teammates. Recognizing their accomplishments within the school community allows others to appreciate the commitment those students bring to their sport.
Thank you Senator Martin for visiting McCaskey and celebrating our student-athletes and Coach Jennings. With the spring season ahead, the team is eager to bring that success back to its home track and give Lancaster more to cheer for.
