At Reynolds Middle School, Nate Andes has a way of making students feel seen before class even begins. This week’s staff shoutout recognizes Nathaniel “Nate” Andes, a 7th grade English language arts teacher at Reynolds Middle School whose impact reaches far beyond the walls of his classroom.
As both an educator and an SDoL alumnus, Andes brings a deep understanding of what it means to grow and belong in the School District of Lancaster.
A colleague who nominated him said:
“Nathaniel Andes truly lives the SDoL mission every day by celebrating and empowering every learner through a unique blend of high expectations and deep empathy. As a 7th Grade ELA teacher and SDoL alumnus, Nate brings a level of ‘rigorous heart’ to his classroom that is rare to find.
- Fostering a Welcoming Community & Belonging:
Nate is often the first person to provide a ‘sense of belonging’ before a student even enters the classroom. Whether he is greeting students with his signature ‘Hello Sunshine!’ and a warm smile, or collaborating with Dr. Testa to host the Friday morning ‘Limbo Entrance’ to the 7th-grade hall, he ensures school is a place of joy and laughter. His commitment to being a trauma-informed educator allows him to lean into student behaviors with grace, using restorative practices to keep students connected to their school community rather than pushing them away. - Discovering Strengths & Building Confidence: Nate’s impact stretches far beyond the ELA curriculum he helped write. He empowers students to discover their strengths in diverse arenas:
- In Athletics: As the Boys Basketball Assistant Coach, he emphasizes the ‘student’ in student-athlete.
- In Leadership: As a Student Council co-leader, he gives students a platform to find their voices.
- In Spirit: Through the ‘Reynolds Rumble,’ Nate connects his personal passion for professional wrestling with school fundraising, showing students that their unique interests can be used to better their community.
No matter the occasion—be it a dance, a competition, or a quiet moment in the hall—Mr. Andes shows up. He celebrates our students’ academic wins and their personal milestones with equal fervor. Nate doesn’t just teach at Reynolds; he builds a home for every student who walks through its doors.”

That kind of impact reflects the heart of SDoL’s mission to celebrate and empower every learner, fostering a welcoming community where students can discover their strengths, build confidence, and find a sense of belonging.
Nate lives that mission in the everyday moments that shape school culture. He creates joy in the hallway. He holds students to high expectations while making sure they know they’re supported. He approaches challenging moments with care and keeps students connected to their school community.
Nate helps students see what’s possible for themselves. He reminds them that their voice matters, their interests matter, and their growth matters. He helps build the kind of school environment students remember. One where every student has another adult in their corner.
