School Counseling for High School Students

High school years are full of growth, promise, excitement, frustration, disappointment and hope. It is the time when students begin to discover what the future holds for them. High school counselors in SDoL have a wonderful opportunity to positively impact these years by collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to promote academic growth and social/emotional health as well as solidify postsecondary plans that help students achieve their future goals. High school counselors in SDoL help students realize their full potential to become productive, contributing members of the larger community as they aim to prepare students for that next big step.

Academic Supports

School counselors play a critical role in ensuring students have the academic development (in addition to the social/emotional and career development) knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to be successful. School counselors assist schools in providing an environment conducive to and supportive of academic success. At the high school level, school counselors in SDoL are skilled in removing barriers to learning and promoting the development of skills necessary for postsecondary success.

Social-Emotional Supports

Adolescence can be an emotionally turbulent time, which is why school counselors in SDoL are committed to supporting students’ social/emotional needs. As advocates for students, school counselors promote a positive environment that enhances students’ ability to manage the social/emotional demands of their lives in healthy ways. School counselors use strategies to promote a school environment designed to propel students toward positive mindsets and behaviors supporting social/emotional development through collaboration and direct and indirect services.
