Our students: ready to take the next step

School District of Lancaster is committed to making sure every graduate of McCaskey High School is ready to pursue a college degree or start their career.

Regardless of whether a student goes on to college, the military, or the workforce, we want students to leave McCaskey prepared for their next step.  We invest in our students’ readiness through a comprehensive K-12 college and career readiness curriculum, rigorous courses, and the opportunity to take college classes at no cost. Together we can make students future ready.

Elementary School:

Expose

Exposing students to college and career opportunities starts early at School District of Lancaster. Through a partnership with Thaddeus Stevens, kindergarten students learn from professors and tour a college campus. All students explore career opportunities in their classroom through monthly interactive lessons during College and Career First Fridays. As students prepare for the transition to middle school, all 5th grade students participate in college tours and a STEM career fair. Through these comprehensive programs, students begin to see the connections between careers, personal interests, and their education.

Middle School:

Explore

Middle school gives students the opportunity to further explore their interests and consider future postsecondary pathways. Students make explicit connections between their coursework and the world of work. This is amplified through the district’s Future Ready Lancaster curriculum and guided career exploration and reflection using the Xello software. Students directly explore college campus, with all 7th grade students visiting Thaddeus Stevens and all 8th graders visiting Lancaster County Career and Technology Center.

High School:

Engage

SDOL offers unparalleled opportunities for students to engage with college or career. McCaskey is the only high school in the county that hosts certified career and technical education programs.  SDOL is the only district in Lancaster County that pays for students to complete one college course per semester. McCaskey houses the IB diploma program and offers a wide range of rigorous AP and IB courses. McCaskey hosts a Future Ready Center with staff that work in collaboration with school counselors to ensure students successfully transition to life after McCaskey. All students work through the Future Ready Lancaster curriculum to develop comprehensive college and career portfolios, and are guided by teachers, counselors, and mentors towards a successful career path.
