School Counseling for Middle School Students

Middle school students are characterized by rapid physical growth, curiosity about their world and an emerging self-identity. Middle school counselors in SDoL have an impact on these years by collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to create a safe, respectful learning environment whereby young adolescents can maximize personal and academic achievement. Middle school counselors in SDoL help students in areas of personal growth by fostering the acquisition of positive social skills and values, setting informed career goals and realizing full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of the larger community.

Academic Supports

School counselors play a critical role in ensuring students have the academic development (in addition to the social/emotional and career development) knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to be successful. School counselors assist schools in providing an environment conducive to and supportive of academic success. At the middle level, school counselors in SDoL are trained in the early identification of barriers to student learning as well as promoting the development of skills necessary for academic success.

Social-Emotional Supports

Adolescence can be an emotionally turbulent time, which is why school counselors in SDoL are committed to supporting students’ social/emotional needs. As advocates for students, school counselors promote a positive environment that enhances students’ ability to manage the social/emotional demands of their lives in healthy ways. School counselors use strategies to promote a school environment designed to propel students toward positive mindsets and behaviors supporting social/emotional development through collaboration and direct and indirect services.
