SDoL welcomes National Center for Community Schools and name Lafayette ES as next Community School

The week of December 9, the School District of Lancaster hosted the National Center for Community Schools, highlighting the work happening in our community schools. The visit showcased SDoL’s commitment to creating equitable, student-centered environments that foster collaboration among students, families, and community partners.

What are Community Schools?

Community schools combine learning opportunities with the academic and social supports each child needs to reach their potential. These schools invest in children through quality teaching, engaging curricula, wraparound supports, positive school climate, and strong ties to family and community. By taking a whole-child, research-based approach, community schools promote practices that achieve results beyond test scores. These results include better school attendance, fewer suspensions, more parent engagement, healthier communities, and improved academic outcomes.

In August, SDoL was awarded a technical assistance grant to improve scalability and alignment with the community school framework. This grant strengthens the district’s efforts to ensure that every student has access to resources that support their growth.

Two schools—Washington Elementary and Burrowes Elementary—have been recognized as exemplary communities of practice. This designation reflects their dedication to the community school model and their success in creating environments where students and families thrive. Both schools will join a national network of community schools committed to sharing best practices and driving change.

Introducing Our Newest Community School

SDoL is excited to announce Lafayette Elementary School as our newest community school, established in partnership with Bright Side Opportunities Center. This marks the addition of our sixth community school, expanding resources for students and families in Lancaster.

Lafayette Elementary, located in Southwest Lancaster City, addresses the needs of its diverse community. In partnership with Bright Side Opportunities Center, the school will offer services and resources to support student success and family well-being. BSOC provides services and programming to help individuals thrive emotionally, physically, and intellectually, with a focus on youth and community development.

Looking ahead, the district plans to introduce its seventh community school in 2025. Details will be shared as plans develop.

Dr. Miles, Superintendent, shared his thoughts on the district’s progress: “The National Center for Community Schools’ visit highlights the work being done in Lancaster to create equitable, student-centered environments. The recognition of Washington and Burrowes Elementary Schools, along with the launch of Lafayette Elementary as our newest community school, demonstrates our commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive. Together, we’re building a brighter future for Lancaster, one school and one partnership at a time.”

Thank you to our staff, families, and community partners for your support. Together, we are making a lasting impact on Lancaster’s students and families.
