Mathematics learning in SDoL empowers critical thinkers

The School District of Lancaster is committed to high-quality instruction in Mathematics. Our students need to be critical thinkers and problem solvers with a global perspective. That’s why our mathematics instruction supports student discourse and reflection, so that students participate in, and own their learning and success. They learn the skills necessary to work collaboratively and independently to be thinkers, doers, and leaders.

Growing a strong mathematics foundation

In order to be confident and successful mathematicians, our students need opportunities to reason, problem solve, critique, and analyze. Because of this, our goal is to provide them with access to the tools and strategies that will make them successful. The strategies and practices our students engage in are designed to meet their individual and collective needs, and assist in the attainment of achievement and equity for all students. Students are encouraged to use tools, manipulatives, and technology from the moment they begin school to grow in their understanding and use of mathematics to build a strong foundation.

A modern curriculum for 21st Century learners

As we continue to strive toward these goals, both the elementary and secondary math curricula are in the process of amendment to reflect the shifts necessary for continued and sustained growth and achievement. Instructional practices are studied, implemented, and adapted to support students to be prepared for college and career. This results in students who are empowered, informed, and proficient; ready to step into the 21st Century.
